Our Approach to Lumbar Microdiscectomy

At Palm Beach Spine & Disc Replacement Center, lumbar microdiscectomy is approached with precision, restraint, and a clear focus on preserving healthy spinal anatomy. Surgery is only considered when symptoms, imaging, and diagnostic findings all point to a compressed nerve that has not improved with appropriate non-surgical care.

When microdiscectomy is the right option, our team uses minimally invasive techniques to address the specific disc fragment causing nerve irritation. With advanced imaging review, a tubular retractor system, and surgical magnification, the goal is to remove only the problematic portion of the disc while limiting disruption to nearby muscles, bone, and supporting structures.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

Before Surgery

Your care begins with a detailed consultation at our Palm Beach office. The team will review your imaging, symptoms, and treatment history to confirm whether a herniated disc is causing your nerve pain.

If lumbar microdiscectomy is recommended, Dr. Jason M. Cuéllar will explain the procedure, recovery, and any non-surgical options that may still be appropriate.

During the Procedure

Lumbar microdiscectomy is often performed as an outpatient procedure. Through a small incision, typically about 1 to 2 inches, Dr. Cuéllar uses specialized instruments and magnification to remove only the disc material pressing on the nerve.

In many cases, the procedure takes less than an hour.

Recovery

Most patients are walking within a few hours after surgery. Some incision soreness is normal, but leg pain from nerve compression may improve quickly.

Many patients return to light activity within a few days, with fuller recovery over several weeks depending on their condition and surgeon’s guidance.
