Recovery After Surgery
Many patients want to know when they can shower, walk, drive, return to work, and resume normal routines after spine surgery. Recovery depends on the specific procedure, your overall health, and how your body responds after treatment.
While every patient receives personalized guidance, these general recovery guidelines can help you better understand what to expect after surgery.
LUMBAR
(LOW BACK)
PROCEDURES
Posterior Lumbar One- or Two-Level Fusion Recovery
Recovery varies by patient, but this is a general timeline after lumbar fusion.
Week 1: Most patients begin walking on day 1, go home around day 2 or 3, and may begin showering around that time if approved.
Week 2: Walking improves, pain medication is usually reduced, and a wound check is typically scheduled 10 to 14 days after surgery. Driving may begin once you are off narcotic pain medication.
Weeks 3-4: Many patients are driving and may return to non-physical work.
Weeks 4-6: A follow-up visit is usually scheduled around 6 weeks, often with the first post-op X-ray.
Weeks 6-12: Daily activity often improves. Bone fusion may take about 3 to 4 months for many patients, with full recovery varying by person.
Posterior Lumbar Minimally-Invasive Decompression/Microdiskectomy:
Recovery varies, but this is a general timeline after minimally invasive lumbar decompression or microdiscectomy.
Week 1: Most patients walk on day 1 and go home the same day or the next day. Showering may begin around day 2 or 3 if approved.
Week 2: Walking improves, pain medication is often reduced, and a wound check is usually scheduled 10 to 14 days after surgery. Driving may begin once you are off narcotic pain medication. Lifting is usually limited to under 10 pounds.
Weeks 3-4: Many patients are driving and may return to non-physical work. Lifting restrictions typically remain in place.
Weeks 4-6: A follow-up visit is usually scheduled around 6 weeks. Physical therapy or light exercise may begin if approved.
Weeks 6-12: Most patients return to more normal activity. Lifting may increase up to 30 pounds with your surgeon’s guidance.
Anterior Lumbar Discectomy and Fusion Recovery
Recovery varies, but this is a general timeline after anterior lumbar discectomy and fusion.
Week 1: Most patients begin walking on day 1, go home around day 2 to 4, and may start showering around day 2 or 3 if approved.
Week 2: Walking usually improves, pain medication is often reduced, and a wound check is typically scheduled 10 to 14 days after surgery. Driving may begin once you are off narcotic pain medication.
Weeks 3-4: Many patients are driving and may return to non-physical work.

Weeks 6-12: Patients often return to more normal activity. Bone growth onto the implant is typically progressing, and physical therapy or gym exercise may begin if approved.
Months 3-6: Many patients reach fuller recovery during this period, depending on healing, activity level, and surgical guidance.
CERVICAL (NECK)
PROCEDURES
Anterior Cervical Disc Replacement Recovery:
Recovery varies, but this is a general timeline after anterior cervical disc replacement.
Week 1: Most patients begin walking on day 1, go home around day 1 or 2, and may start showering around day 2 or 3 if approved. A sore throat or mild swallowing difficulty is common during the first week.
Week 2: Swallowing usually improves. A wound check is typically scheduled 10 to 14 days after surgery. Neck pain is often minimal, and many patients begin tapering off narcotic pain medication. Driving and returning to work may be allowed once you are off pain medication.
Weeks 3-4: Many patients begin returning to normal daily routines.
Weeks 4-6: Bone healing to the implant is often complete or near complete.
Weeks 6-12: Full recovery is commonly expected during this period, depending on your healing and surgeon’s guidance.
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Recovery
Recovery varies, but this is a general timeline after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.
Week 1: Most patients begin walking on day 1, go home around day 1 or 2, and may start showering around day 2 or 3 if approved. A sore throat or swallowing difficulty is common during the first week.
